Reading the news and keeping up with them pays off. At least I know why my internet access to most of my favourite sites and my hosting server blah.. blah.. blah.. doesn’t work as fast as it had been a few days back. It turns out that there are a disruption in the undersea cable that connects Malaysia to Europe.

Users trying access to any IP or server hosts in Europe will experience a major snail pace download like what I had experinced today. The repairs are currently underway and will be completed by 31st December 2008. For further information on the matter, please read the below script which I had taken from TheStar.com.my

Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) has reported some disruption to its Internet services due to circuit faults on the submarine cable network linking Malaysia and Europe. The services would be completely restored by Dec 31.

TM, in a statement yesterday, said customers using its Internet services may experience slow browsing while accessing websites hosted in Europe and that those using other IP (Internet Protocol) services such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) and other critical business applications linked to Europe may also experience some service degradation.

It said the affected cables, on the South-East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 4 (SMW4) submarine network between Palermo in southern Italy and Alexandria in northern Egypt, were being repaired.

Some of the links, meanwhile, had been rerouted to ease congestion, it added.

During the restoration process, traffic to northern America may experience minor degradation while traffic to other countries was unaffected, it said.

Oh well.. It’s back to 56kbps for us in Malaysia.
